Gender, race, and nationality all play a huge part in how these displays of emotion are received. Russian girls competing in gymnastics are often characterized as being poor sports or divas when they cry at competition and their expressions of emotion are always contrasted against the ‘poised’ [white] gymnasts from the US. It would be really interesting to look at the constructions and perceptions of femininity as they vary from sport to sport on the international stage.
